Getting married is a significant moment in anyone's life

Not everyone has a Christian marriage service in church but we know that making a Civil Partnership or having a Civil Wedding is one of the most important occasions in life.

The church has a set of services that enable those who have had a civil ceremony to come to God and ask his blessing on their new relationship, and to seek God's guidance and strength. The services of prayer and dedication are simple services acknowledging the commitment already made.

  • What's different to a wedding service?

    The church has a set of services that enable those who have had a civil ceremony to come to God and ask his blessing on their new relationship, and to seek God’s guidance and strength. The services of prayer and dedication are simple services acknowledging the commitment already made.

  • Can it feel like a marriage service?

    Yes, you can have all the extras like hymns, flowers and an organist and choir or you go have a quiet more intimate service. The choice is yours!

  • What about same-sex blessings?

    The Church of England is currently exploring what prayers might be offered to those who have entered into a same-sex marriage. “Prayers of Love and Faith” are currently available to use as part of a Sunday service.
    If you would like to have your relationship blessed using these prayers you can do so at Ottery St Mary, Wiggaton, Alfington, Feniton,  Escot and Payhembury.

  • Can we renew our wedding vows?

    The Church also has a service for the renewal of vows, which some couples choose to use at significant milestones in their married life.

The fee for having a blessing in church is £531.

There is no fee for a renewal of vows.

There are a number of optional extras you can add to your blessing. The options and their prices vary per church so will be discussed with you by the OVMC Administrator once you have sent in your enquiry form.

  • Have the bells rung before and/or after your service
  • Have the hymns you have chosen sung by the church choir as well as the congregation
  • Brighten up the church and the day with an assortment of flower arrangements
  • Add some heating during the winter to warm up the occasion
  • Have the music you have chosen played on the church organ
  • Have an expert on hand before and after the service to help with proceedings
